A friend of mine sent a nice analysis of the recent change in the Core CPI. It detailed seven categories that have increased or decreased the index. This information is useful for investors. For the common working folk, it is wholly inaccurate. Political types often cite changes in the CPI as an ‘indication of inflation for our economy.’ This is a gross misrepresentation of the true state of Main Street’s wealth. The real measurement that should be tracked is household wealth longitudinally. It is a metric that elected politicians should improve. Can anyone direct me to such a wealth index?
By the way, an interesting comment by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is worth sharing and reflection. He said, “…abundance should be measured at the factory gate and not at the checkout counter.”
