I enjoy using those skills to provide new insights into historical events.

Neal has a long-time interest in military history. In August 2022, Neal was a featured speaker at the Military Writers Society of America’s annual conference. His presentation was titled “Writing on Our West – Nonfiction and Fiction.” The focus of published work has been on the Indian Wars of the American West and the Great Sioux War of 1876. His peer-reviewed paper, Close Quarter Combat at the Little Big Horn— Cavalry Soldiers vs. Indian Warriors,” was published in The Brian C. Pohanka 33rd Annual Symposium of the Custer Battlefield Historical & Museum Association (CBHMA). This paper was one of five articles selected for an author’s presentation at the Symposium in June 2019. His paper – First Contact—Custer’s Fatal Assessment at Luce, Nye-Cartwright Ridges, appeared in the CBHMA’s premier annual historical journal, Greasy Grass, in May 2021. His article—Hiding in Plain Sight – Red Horse Drawings Reveal Pertinent Details on Rifles at the Little Bighorn Battle, demonstrated the pictographic nature and accuracy of early Indian artwork.
