I had the pleasure of attending the Billy W. Sills Lecture series presentation “Reading, Researching, and Writing on America’s West” by Neal Ostman on February 21, 2026.
Ostman’s presentation succeeded in targeting the level of his Fort Worth audience and displayed his enthusiasm for sharing the history of the American West. This presentation largely focused on Custer’s Last Stand. The subject matter was brought to life as a result of Ostman’s extensive research, which went well beyond written history and museum exhibits. Mr. Ostman visited historic sites and sought out primary sources that expanded understanding of the history and how individual people experienced events at the time. This brought the historic events to life. His presentation skills were engaging and approachable. His passion for researching, reading and writing about the West is palpable and resulted in a most informative and enjoyable presentation.
